On the occasion of the Great American Eclipse, August 21, 2017...

From Mark Fleischer, Richard's son:

Some years ago my father, Richard Fleischer, was directing the movie “Barabbas” in Rome. One of the most dramatic scenes of the movie was the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. At the time that my father was preparing to shoot that scene, a total eclipse of the sun was scheduled to occur at nearby Sienna.

Being an adventurous and creative soul, my father moved the entire company to Sienna to shoot that scene during the total solar eclipse, something that no one had ever done before.

This being the first time, nobody had a clue how to light the set. Using their best guesses, my father and the director of photography set up three cameras each with different settings, crossed their fingers and waited for the sun to almost completely disappear, at which point my father yelled “action.”

The world darkened, a strange and eerie light embraced the assembled crew and, against this backdrop the crucifixion of Jesus Christ was re-enacted. The filmmakers’ guesses turned out to be correct, and one of the most uniquely beautiful motion picture scenes came into being.

I remember Dad telling me two additional facts about the scene: first, one of the stunt men on the crosses actually passed out due to the cold (they were not warmly dressed, needless to say; second, the cross of light that appears over the cross at one point was completely fortuitous and I don't think they even knew that it was there until the film was developed and play at rushes. I remember the eclipse in Rome. You never forget your first. We got about 80% here in PA.

Because of your dad's movie '20,000 Leagures Under the Sea', which I saw 'The Making of.." on Disneyland TV when I was 8 years old.I decide right then to make movies. I've read your dad's book twice and now reading it again.

I remain a big fan of htis other movies, especially 'The Vikings', 'Viloent Saturday', 'Compulsion' and more. I've listened to his commentary on 'Tora Tora Tora' and 'Soylent Green' many times as it's an inspiration to me. And especially watching him on the new 'Making of 20,000 Leagues' documentary.

I've just finished directing my 7th feature 'Forbidden Power' and getting ready for release. Now re-reading your dad's book to inspire me for my next feature.

This is the fist time I've been to this site and happy to find it and will read everything here.

Paul

I'm the creator of this website and blog. My name is Jeni Mahoney and I'm Richard Fleischer's grand niece. This specific blog post came from Richard's son (Mark), but I built and maintain the site.

Hello. Do you know if your uncle was a Christian? He managed to make an amazing Christian movie. Not perfect scripturally, but it touched me long before I ever fully believed, and years later now I am a believer. Visually, I believe it is absolutely the greatest Christian film ever made.
